Achille Compagnoni, born in Santa Caterina Valfurva on 26 September 1914, was a prominent figure in the landscape of Italian mountaineering. His figure is inextricably linked to the history of the great mountain explorations of the twentieth century, an area in which he was able to distinguish himself for determination and technical skill.

His most celebrated and memorable achievement dates to 1954, the year in which he participated in the historic expedition on Mount K2. Together with his rope partner Lino Lacedelli, Compagnoni succeeded in reaching for the first time in history the summit of this extraordinary and formidable mountain, writing a fundamental page for international sport and mountaineering.
