Arnaldo Forlani
Arnaldo Forlani, born in Pesaro on 8 December 1925, was one of the leading figures of the Christian Democracy and a central figure in Italian politics between the 1970s and early 1990s. Within the party he held prominent roles, leading the national secretariat in two different mandates (from 1969 to 1973 and from 1989 to 1992) and presiding over the national council for a long period. On the question of internal dynamics, after being for many years the principal collaborator of Amintore Fanfani in the "Nuove Cronache" faction, he distanced himself in the early 1980s before subsequently founding, at the end of that decade, the "Azione Popolare" area together with Vincenzo Scotti and Antonio Gava.
His institutional trajectory saw him hold the highest positions of state, including those of President and Vice President of the Council of Ministers, as well as leading the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence and State Holdings. In 1992 the Christian Democracy proposed him as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, but his bid for the Quirinal was obstructed by rebels.
