Born in Milan on 16 February 1918, Achille Castiglioni was a prominent figure in the landscape of architecture and industrial design in Italy. The son of an artist, he learned the first elements of the trade from his father Giannino Castiglioni, a celebrated designer considered the founder of Italian design.

Together with his brothers Pier Giacomo and Livio, also trained under their father's guidance, Achille Castiglioni played a leading role in the development of national industrial design. The synergy and talent of the Castiglioni brothers gave rise to creations of extraordinary artistic and functional value, such that several of their works entered the permanent collections of prestigious international institutions, including the MoMA in New York.
